The Challenges of Surveying Shallow Waters

EM3002D Usage on Demanding Mapping Projects

In late 2012, iXblue Australia was invited to present at the Kongsberg Maritime Subsea User Conference in Singapore.

Our Senior Surveyor, Dave Mundy, presented a paper titled “EM3002D Usage on Demanding Mapping Projects”.

During the presentation of his paper Dave provided details of the challenges of surveying shallow waters and why we chose the specific fitout configuration for the survey motor boat – SMB ELAINE.

The Elaine was used for several survey projects in inland and offshore regions in New Zealand and was equipped with

  • a dual head Kongsberg EM3002 Multi-beam echo sounder
  • an iXblue ROVINS
  • an RDI Doppler Velocity Log

The projects included the survey of the Waikato River, the survey of some inshore areas of the Chatham Islands, the survey of Lake Rotomahana and a survey of the Tekapo Canals.  The four survey areas highlight the utility of using a dual head configuration for shallow water survey projects.
